Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
