Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
